08 May 2011 | A write up from young Craig Mason
Sunday the 8th of May 2011, the day Benji and patches had their first ever taste of human vomit. For this was the morning of Solent Flyers final game of the season and manager Darren was feeling the nerves, so much so he was literally sick with nerves.
Flyers already had one piece of silverware in Darrens bedroom topped up with a constant supply of Bisto and this was the opportunity to add a canter.
Flyers were rocked by the news of captain Scotty missing due to a prior arrangement, something to do with dressing up and playing with guns. This coupled with the already massive losses of strike duo Junior and Steve due to international call ups and injury, flyers were far from a full complement. Never the less they still knew they had the tools to finish the job.
As the players arrived at the venue it became apparent that not all squad members felt so passionate as the bearded biker cox, with Francis Benali turning up hungover and Uncle Albert (bungy) arriving on foot with 10p slots where his eyes used to be.
The line-up was announced with flyers opting for a 4-4-2 diamond which had famously won them the cup two weeks earlier. Also in common with the cup final was the arrival of the Green Dragon gypsies with Lidl carrier bags full of special brew and the chants of green Army. Flyers were in for another gauntlet of hate.
Kick Off- Green Dragon as usual looked really up for it from the go, and with it was clear the rumour of Dwain Chambers being spotted coming out of their changing rooms may have been not just idle terrace talk.
Pauls first act was to batter the dragons striker from behind and this set the scene for the 90 minutes to come. Green Dragon had the better of the first half exchanges coming close on several occasions and if it wasnt for the heroics of Keeper Ryan Dragons would of found an early lead. Flyers were looking very sloppy from front to back and with __ minutes gone Dragon broke the deadlock with a sloppy goal. Flyers heads were down and Fashs breakfast was almost up. As the half wore on flyers started to get into rhythm with Scruse and cox starting to put some passing moves together. A free kick awarded 30 yards out gave flyers the opportunity to get the ball in the box for Paul and Potter to attack. Scruse swung it in only for it to be cleared to Cox who managed to clip it back in over the defenders head to find the clinical Gary Fox who tucked it away.
Flyers were level but far from dominating the game and the Green Dragon Fans and players knew it to their frustration. The next ten minutes played out the same as the first with dragon dominating much of the attacking play. Dragons failure to put their chances away was finally punished, when Tim the machine Evans Slipped Mason through who rounded the keeper and managed to see the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Flyers fans were ecstatic and Dragons were close to paralytic!
Half Time came and you could be sure on the Gaffer delivering a half time team talk which would struggle to motivate Lance Armstrong. But the flyers players knew what had to be done, didnt they?
Flyers kicked off but that was about all they did right for the first 20 minutes of the second half, as they soon found themselves 3-2 down after some poor defensive work. All too often the Dragon were finding a clear route to goal. And with time ticking down flyers needing a win to secure the title were getting desperate. Up steps the summer Sam Potter, fine work from mason down the right gave Potter a simple tap in to draw the game level. Flyers were back in it, needing just one goal to bring the trophy back. Pressure from flyers and counter attacking play from Green Dragon saw a frantic end to the game with both teams coming very close to scoring, in particular the usually clinical Gary Fox missing from a matter of inches due to a dodgy bounce? Erm heard that one the previous game. Flyers fans and players alike thought that must have been their last opportunity, the Dragon fans could sense victory!!
A counter attack from flyers resulted in a 93rd minute corner! Mason would be taking it, knowing he needed a good delivery to give flyers one last chance of snatching victory. He whipped it in and who should step up to deliver thee title winning goal? None other then the managers brother Paul the goat Dickinson! After a season of missing so many headed chances, when it really mattered he was on the mark!! Flyers players went crazy!!
