What is back pain

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy report that MSD’s are the main cause of work absence and Physiotherapy is extremely effective and in one study 80% of people who had physiotherapy were able to carry on working and did not have to go off sick.
Back pain has a wide variety of causes, from picking up a heavy object incorrectly to spending too long in one position. Feeling anxious or stressed can make the pain worse. It is rarely due to a serious health problem.
Physiotherapy work wells for managing back pain. Seeing a physiotherapist at the earliest opportunity, can not only speed up recovery but also prevent the problem happening again.
A physiotherapist will first check out if you have a serious health problem that may be connected to your back pain and then find the reason for your back pain, including preventative measures to help with further episodes.
Physios offer a range of treatments that have proven to be effective with back pain. These include manual treatments, and acupuncture. Your physio will also advise you on appropriate exercise and pain relief.
Top tips for back pain
Exercise & activity are the most important ways of helping yourself.
Keep moving and continue with activities such as swimming or walking.
Avoid sitting too long.
Gentle stretches to prevent stiffness
Check posture when using computers/games or watching television
Strengthen your trunk muscles as this may help to protect your back.
Joining a Pilates Class
Matt based Pilates is a great way of helping with back pain and it aim is to strengthen your core muscles.
